Adam Yates
BLACK BELT COACH
Adam Yates was born in Lakenheath, England, in 1986 on a U.S. military base. After his father separated from the military in the early 1990s, his family settled in Ohio. Like many students of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Adam was first introduced to the art through Royce Gracie and the early UFC. As kids, he and his brother would imitate Royce’s techniques on each other and their friends, sparking an early interest in grappling. Adam has been a lifelong athlete, competing in folkstyle wrestling, swimming, soccer, and track and field. His serious Jiu-Jitsu training began while he was stationed in San Diego with the U.S. Navy. During that time, he trained with Fabio Santos before later joining Rob Lovi and the Pedro Sauer Association, where he received his blue belt. After leaving the military and beginning university training to become a forester, Adam spent several years away from the mat. During that period, he and his family moved from California to Colorado and eventually to North Carolina. At the start of 2017, Adam met Professor Paulo Santana in Winston-Salem. Since then, Adam and his son Sawyer have been devoted students of Paulo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Adam later competed for the first time as a purple belt and won his division. Today, Adam is a brown belt and assistant coach under Professor Paulo Santana at Paulo Santana BJJ in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
